About Me
Avellana Translations is run by Hazel Hayman, an experienced Spanish and Catalan to English translator. I am native British and currently live in Suffolk in the east of the UK. My language career began as far back as 2002 when I went to the Monaco Grand Prix with the British Red Cross as the team interpreter.
Since then, I spent time travelling, developing my language skills and working for the National Health Service (NHS) as a registered nurse (adult). This gave me a thorough grounding in anatomy and physiology, pharmacology, a wide range of health conditions, medical law and patient consent. As a registered nurse I worked on a busy medical ward specialising mainly in endocrinology (diabetes), dementia, and gastroenterology. I also worked in other areas such as the Post-Anaesthetic Care Unit, and the renal unit (dialysis). Throughout my career I relied on my language skills when caring for patients whose first language is not English and translating notes for patients requiring treatment whilst abroad.
In 2020, I returned to translating full-time. Since then I have translated over 1 million words. I routinely provide translation services in the pharmacovigilance and clinical trials industries. My unique skill set has also led me down the road of peer-review editing for researchers seeking to publish articles in medical journals.
Commencing in September 2021, I also returned to academia and began studying part-time, for a Master’s degree in Translation Studies through the University of Bristol. I currently hold the enough credits to graduate with a PGCert in Translation. This has been an exciting opportunity to expand on the experience I have gained, and spend time further researching areas of translation theory and practice. Avellana Translations has continued to operate as normal during this time.
